Order of Operations Worksheets

In order for us to calculate values correctly in mathematics, we must follow the proper order of operations.  First we check to see if an expression has any grouping symbols, such as parentheses or brackets.  These calculations should be done before any others.  Second, you’ll want to simplify any values written using exponents.  Next, you can tackle any multiplication or division calculations.  The multiplying and dividing should be performed starting on the left side and moving to the right, just like reading a book.  Finally, you will need to take care of any addition or subtraction that occurs in the expression.  The addition and subtraction is also performed from left to right.

Many younger students start off memorizing this order of operations by utilizing the phrase “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally” or “PEMDAS”.  Which stands for Parentheses/Exponents/Multiply/Divide/Add/Subtract.

Like any other routine, practice makes perfect.  You can be practicing the correct order of operations by using the math worksheets below.  These order of operations worksheets start off with simple expressions, usually containing just two or three steps, then get progressively more complicated.
