These free systems of equations worksheets will help you practice solving real-life systems of equations using the “substitution” method.

Each set of free algebra worksheets is a progressive series that starts with simple problems featuring positive integers.  Consequently, student are able to practice the basics of substitution without the frustrations that often come with negative numbers and variables.  Don’t worry, there are plenty of exercises featuring equations like “3x – (-y) = 142″ and “5x – 3(2x-1) = 14 + y”.

The substitution worksheets include systems where equations are written in standard form and slope-intercept form.  Your students will also encounter systems of equations featuring the distributive property, variables on both sides of the equation, and like terms.  Once your class has mastered the art of substitution, they can practice creating and solving their own systems of equations that mirror real-life situations.
